Drinkers set to splash out €1bn at beer festival

Oktoberfest may be about drinking beer and wearing funny clothes, but nowadays it's big business - with nearly €1 billion set to be spent at this year's festival.
And that's not the only amazing fact about the legendary Munich beer festival.

Oktoberfest was first held in 1810 when Prince Ludwig of Bavaria, who was later crowned King Ludwig I, wanted his people to share in the celebration of his marriage to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12.

Anniversary celebrations continued each year, usually starting in late September and ending in the first week of October.

BILD has collected some of the best Oktoberfest facts:

Approximately €955 million are spent during the 16 days of Oktoberfest.

About 12,000 people are employed, 1,600 of whom are waitresses

There are about 100,000 seats in the festival halls.

Lost property at last year's Oktoberfest totalled about 4,000 items, including 260 pairs of glasses, 200 mobile phones, a wedding ring and two crutches...

At the 2007 event, 69,406 hectorlitres of beer, 521,872 roasted chickens and 142,253 pairs of pork sausages were consumed.

Thủ tướng Đức Angela đã ghé thăm quán ăn của người Việt mang tên Soup & Nem ở thành phố Leipzig trên đường đi vận động tranh cử.

Cuộc viếng thăm hôm 15/9 diễn ra rất nhanh và không được báo trước. Tờ Tuổi Trẻ cuối tuần cho hay đây là lần đầu tiên trong vòng 20 năm kể từ khi nước Đức thống nhất, một thủ tướng ghé thăm cơ sở kinh doanh của người Việt. Bà đã bắt tay các nhân viên trong quán ăn.

Merkel, 55 tuổi, đang tiến hành cuộc vận động cho cuộc bầu cử sẽ diễn ra cuối tuần này. Đảng Dân chủ Thiên Chúa giáo (CDU) của bà được dự đoán sẽ giành chiến thắng dễ dàng. Theo kết quả cuộc thăm dò dư luận mới đây do tạp chí Der Spiegel tiến hành, Merkel nhận được sự ủng hộ của 76% số người tham gia. Đối thủ chính của Merkel trong cuộc bầu cử lần này là đương kim ngoại trưởng Frank-Walter Steinmeier, thuộc đảng Dân chủ Xã hội (SPD).

Theo công bố của Đức, hiện nay ở nước này có 85.000 người Việt Nam sinh sống và làm ăn. Trong đó có 60.000 người được chính phủ Đức cho phép ở lại, những người này có điều kiện làm việc và ăn ở ổn định.

High School Graduation Ceremony July 04, 2009

The High School Graduation Ceremony of the Michaeli High School in Munich (as known Abiball) was being celebrated at the Paulaner beer cellar surrounded with its shady beer-garden/Biergarten. Students who passed the examination receive their Certificate of High School Graduation on this ceremony. It’s an ending and a beginning for all students here. We’re there. Let’s party! BEST WISHES!

The commuter

I was on a regional train of Deutsche Bahn/German Rail on the way back from work and have had a lot of time for dreaming, and... thinking about life and I have really enjoyed the fascinating landscape especially in winter when the sun is slowly going down behind the horizon.
I love these trains, because they carry me weekdays to Augsburg and bring me back home in Munich after a day of working.
It was about 26°F and cold outside. As I saw the first snow-covered fields in southern Bavaria Germany, I began to feel more and more homesick. I was tired but happy like the other commuters, I guessed.
